JUST IN: Suspend All Protests Now, Buhari Tells #EndSARS Movement
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the #EndSARS protesters to call off their protest with immediate effect as the government is looking into meeting all their demands.
The President made the disclosure during a live broadcast to the nation on Thursday.
"I, therefore, call on our youths to discontinue the street protests and constructively engage the government in finding solutions. Your voice has been heard loud and clear and we are responding.
"And I call on all Nigerians to go about their normal businesses and enjoin security agencies to protect the lives and properties of all law-abiding citizens without doing harm to those they are meant to protect. Let me pay tribute to officers of the Nigeria Police Force who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty," Buhari said.
This comes after suspected thugs hijacked the peaceful #EndSARS protests to perpetuate looting, killing, and arson in different parts of the country.
According to Amnesty International, at least 12 people were killed when the army opened fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night.
Despite video evidence of soldiers firing at protesters, the army has denied any involvement describing it as “fake news”.
The #EndSARS have staged days of nationwide protests calling for an end to police brutality, kidnappings and extrajudicial killings.
Despite the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the protests have continued with calls for police reforms, compensation for victims of police brutality and the prosecution of indicted officers.
