The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, Thursday escaped an ambush staged by suspected Boko Haram insurgents as his Police escort repelled the attack between Bama and Konduga Local Government Areas of the state.
The governor was reported to be on his way to southern Borno area to check on some of the ongoing projects and ensure their completion.
Some of the security escort said that they successfully repelled the ambush and there was no casualty on their side.
According to one of them, “They could not get the governor. It was the last policy vehicle that was attacked after the governor passed. But we dealt with them and dispersed and clear the road before joining the convoy in Konduga.”
Government officials and politicians who are part of the convoy told newsmen that, they arrived Maiduguri at about 9:00pm on Thursday owing to the failed ambush by Boko Haram.
One of the politicians, who pleaded anonymity said, “So, we went round to some of the local government and on our way coming, we left Bama and heading to Konduga when the Boko Haram tried to stop us,”
According to him, the governor did not want such news to be escalated as it would encourage the insurgents to continue with such evil ways.
The government is yet to make a statement to the effect.
Recall that seven months ago, former Governor Kashim Shettima was also attacked by the sect on his way to Gamboru Ngala, still in Borno.
