The Senate has called on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to immediately mobilize relief for communities affected by recent attacks in Benue South. The chamber said displaced persons and victims receiving treatment in hospitals need urgent support to ease their suffering.
Lawmakers specifically asked the ministry to provide food, medical supplies, and temporary shelter. The Senate noted that many families were forced from their homes and are currently taking refuge in unsafe conditions while the injured depend on overstretched health facilities.
In addition to humanitarian aid, the Senate mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, Defence, and National Security and Intelligence to meet with security chiefs. The committees are to review the operational strategies currently being deployed in Benue South and report back on gaps and progress.
The directive followed the adoption of a motion on the spate of attacks in three communities in the senatorial district. Senators who contributed to the debate described the incidents as tragic and called for coordinated action between humanitarian and security agencies.
Responding after the motion was adopted, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, expressed sympathy to Senator Moro and the people of Benue South. He said the Senate stands with the victims and their families during this difficult period.
Akpabio stressed that every Nigerian deserves to live without fear. He urged security agencies to intensify efforts and ensure that citizens are protected in their homes and communities.
“Nigerians deserve the right to sleep in their houses with their eyes closed and go about their lawful activities without fear,” the Senate President said. He added that government must restore confidence in public safety.
The Senate President also expressed confidence that the resolutions passed would strengthen ongoing security operations in the affected areas. He said the measures should help prevent similar attacks across the country.
As a mark of respect, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims who lost their lives during the attacks in the three communities. Lawmakers stood in solemn remembrance before continuing with proceedings.
The chamber concluded by urging federal and state agencies to work together to deliver relief quickly and to sustain security presence in Benue South until normalcy returns.
