A delegation of European diplomats visited Kano Film Village this week to see firsthand how Kannywood is driving youth employment, education, and economic growth across northern Nigeria. The visit also highlighted how entertainment can carry powerful social messages that shape communities.
Led by Gautier Mignot, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the delegation included ambassadors and deputy heads of mission from Denmark, Spain, Italy, France, Czechia, Finland, Belgium and Austria. Their goal: understand the creative industry’s impact beyond culture.
On arrival, the diplomats were received by Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board, and Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation. Both officials provided an overview of Kannywood’s structure and its growing influence in the region. 
Team Europe met directly with filmmakers, actors, producers, and regulators to discuss the realities of film production in northern Nigeria. They observed a live set for _Hindatu_, a film about a young girl who defies family pressure to marry early so she can continue her education and pursue her dream of becoming a medical doctor.
Ambassador Mignot emphasized the transformative potential of storytelling during the visit. “Stories have the power to inspire change,” he said. “Films that promote education, opportunity and inclusion can spark important conversations and encourage positive change within communities.”
He added that creative industries serve a dual purpose in Nigeria’s economy. “Creative industries are not only about culture. They are also about jobs, skills, entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for young people. Across Nigeria, young people are demonstrating remarkable talent and creativity, and industries such as Kannywood are helping transform that potential into livelihoods and economic opportunity.”
Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha noted that Kannywood actively promotes positive social values while expanding opportunities for practitioners. He said the Films and Video Censorship Board has approved over 10,000 films and supports the sector through training, workshops, and stakeholder engagement. “Our role is not only regulatory,” he explained. “We also work with filmmakers to strengthen professional standards, support capacity development and ensure that films contribute positively to society.”
The delegation toured Kano Film Village, a production facility built by broadcaster and filmmaker Abdullaziz Dansmall to streamline film production. Dansmall described how revenue from his first major production, _Gidang Haya_, was reinvested to expand the site. “Our long-term ambition is to transform the site into a fully developed film village capable of supporting larger productions,” he said.
Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, underscored the industry’s economic weight, citing research that ranks film production as Kano State’s second-largest source of youth employment after agriculture. He stressed that Kannywood’s impact reaches far beyond entertainment, sustaining businesses across the entire value chain.
Challenges remain, Nuhu acknowledged, especially around distribution and access to production facilities. The industry has adapted as DVD markets declined, shifting increasingly to digital platforms and online channels to reach audiences. This pivot has been critical for sustaining revenue and jobs.
The visit aligns with the European Union’s expanded support for Africa-Europe cultural cooperation through the Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture (AEPC). The €30 million programme backs artist mobility, cultural spaces, and collaboration between African and European creatives, reflecting the EU’s recognition of creative industries as drivers of economic opportunity, innovation, and social development.
