The Senate Committee on Police Affairs met in Abuja on Monday for a high-level stakeholders’ session. The meeting focused on key provisions of a bill to repeal and re-enact the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act, 2019.
Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam Mador, Committee Chairman, said the session followed a June 2, 2026 public hearing. Stakeholders at that hearing asked for more consultations and consensus on critical parts of the legislation.
Mador explained that the new bill aims to strengthen the Nigeria Police Trust Fund’s operational framework. The goal is better police funding, infrastructure development, and nationwide capacity building. 
“As legislators, our duty is to pass laws that last and serve the public,” Mador said. He added that the committee wants a final bill that is practical and backed by all key stakeholders.
The committee flagged several areas needing more work. These include the Trust Fund’s governance structure, board establishment and composition, and which authority will conduct needs assessments for the Nigeria Police Force.
Mador said the committee’s approach rests on accountability, transparency, efficiency, and service delivery. The main target is to strengthen the institution and improve policing results across Nigeria.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu also spoke at the meeting. He stressed that the Trust Fund is vital for solving long-term funding problems in the police force. He said police should lead in defining their operational needs because they understand security challenges on the ground.
After the meeting, Disu told journalists the talks were “robust and productive.” Major issues like needs assessment and board composition got detailed attention. He said the police were satisfied with the outcome. The committee will keep consulting stakeholders before finalizing its report on the bill.
