Kogi State Government has commissioned a fully equipped Police Force Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Lokoja to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
Deputy Governor Joel Salifu represented Governor Ododo at Thursday’s inauguration. He said security is a top priority because development only thrives where there’s peace and safety.
The Governor explained that the VCRU has already helped curb violent crimes even while operating from a shared facility. Rising responsibilities prompted the government to build and equip a new, modern operational base. 
The new facility was fully funded by the state. It includes ten offices, detention cells, a conference room, a control room, and uninterrupted power supply to support round-the-clock operations.
To boost response capacity, the government provided four Toyota Hilux trucks, one Bullet-Proof Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carrier, and three Toyota Sienna vehicles.
Governor Ododo also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing national security and backing security agencies. He pledged continued support for the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s policing vision, citing investments in vehicles, communication gadgets, station renovations, APC repairs, patrol vans, and officer welfare.
He urged VCRU officers to serve with integrity, professionalism, and courage. He expressed confidence that the new base and equipment will improve prevention and rapid response to violent crimes statewide.
Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi called the inauguration a major step for Kogi’s security architecture. He said the unit aligns with the IGP’s reform agenda to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and highway attacks through intelligence-led operations. Officers were screened rigorously, and the unit will respect human rights while working with other agencies and communities. Security Adviser Jerry Omodara rtd added that government efforts have reduced insecurity, and remaining criminal elements are being tracked down.
