Fresh political realignments are taking shape within the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, as party stakeholders rally behind Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin ahead of the 2027 elections.
A major shift came when former Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, withdrew from the Kano North Senatorial race and publicly endorsed Barau for re-election.
The decision followed a high-level meeting on Tuesday night with key APC figures from Kano North, as the party fine-tunes its electoral strategy for the state. 
Those in attendance included former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa, Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Sources said the discussions centered on party unity, building consensus, and preventing internal disputes ahead of the next election cycle.
After the consultations, Gwarzo formally stepped down and threw his weight behind Barau as the preferred candidate for Kano North Senatorial District.
In a statement, Gwarzo said the move came after extensive consultations with stakeholders at all levels, and was made in the interest of party cohesion and electoral stability. He cited deference to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of the reason for stepping aside.
Gwarzo thanked his supporters, youths, women groups, elders, the Ulama, and his media team for their backing, and acknowledged guidance from Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ganduje, and other party leaders.
The endorsement is expected to bolster Barau’s position in Kano North as APC works to present a united front for 2027
