A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Dr. Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, is standing trial over allegations of rape and sexual assault. The charges were brought against him by the Lagos State Government following an incident said to have occurred on the university campus on August 22, 2025.
Ojogbo, 53, appeared before Justice Oyindamola Ogala at the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja. He pleaded not guilty to the offences, which the prosecution says violate Sections 260 and 263(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
A student testified that the alleged assault took place in the defendant’s office on campus. While giving evidence, she told the court, “the defendant pinned me down and raped me on that day.” Her testimony formed a central part of the prosecution’s case. 
During cross-examination, defence counsel Bidemi Ademola-Bello, SAN, questioned the witness about statements made to the police and the clothing she wore on the day of the incident. The defence sought to examine inconsistencies and details surrounding her account.
The student confirmed she provided statements at Bariga Police Station on August 27 and 28, and later at the Gender Unit on September 2. The court admitted these statements into evidence after they were tendered.
A photograph of the alleged crime scene was presented by the defence, but the witness said she could not identify it. Justice Ogala subsequently rejected the photograph as evidence, noting that no additional witness was available to authenticate it.
The witness also told the court that a doctor at the university medical centre conducted a swab test and prescribed medication after she reported the incident. She rejected the defence’s suggestion that she washed her clothes to destroy evidence.
Justice Ogala adjourned proceedings until May 25 for continuation of the trial. The prosecution is represented by Ademola Azeez, while Ojogbo maintains his innocence against the charges.
