Fighting CBPP: Nigeria Launches Technical Working Group

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has launched a Technical Working Group to tackle Contagious Bovine Pleuro-Pneumonia (CBPP) in Nigeria. Minister Dr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha inaugurated the group in Abuja, highlighting CBPP’s endemic nature and its impact on the livestock sector. 
CBPP remains a significant challenge, with 17 states reporting outbreaks across all six geopolitical zones. Nigeria’s large cattle population of 54.5 million makes effective management crucial.
The Minister noted 131 documented outbreaks, likely underreported due to surveillance limitations. Structural challenges sustain the disease, linked to livestock movement, vaccination gaps, and weak detection systems.
If unchecked, CBPP will cause economic losses, affecting food security and Nigeria’s livestock trade competitiveness. The Technical Working Group aims to change this trajectory.
The group’s focus is on developing a national control framework, strengthening surveillance, improving vaccination, and modernizing diagnostics.
Livestock owners’ cooperation is essential; the Ministry seeks enhanced engagement with stakeholders.
The Technical Working Group will guide strategy, with government support and collaboration with federal and state structures, private sector, and international partners.
Mrs. Chinyere Akujobi, Permanent Secretary, emphasized CBPP’s impact on farmers and the agricultural sector.
WHO Nigeria Director Dr. Laximikant Chavan pledged support, highlighting 60,000 annual losses due to CBPP.
The Ministry hopes to leverage experience and collaboration to control and eradicate CBPP through the Technical Working Group.
